Apprentices help firm to take active steps to grow

A NORTH EAST financial services firm has the region's largest business support organisation to thank for helping to expand its workforce.
Guisborough-based Active Financial Services Ltd has successfully expanded its operations with the help of two apprentices, recruited through the North East Chamber of Commerce (NECC).
Laura Richmond, 17, is the latest apprentice to have been taken on by the business on a full-time basis after showing real promise whilst working towards her apprenticeship in business administration.
Laura said: “I think the apprenticeship course I am currently taking is beneficial as it is strengthening my knowledge of my role.
“My training advisor has been very supportive and is really helping me to progress both at Active and with my apprenticeship.”
Laura follows Andrew Gilmore, 21, who was offered a full-time position after completing NECC apprenticeships in business administration and later customer services.
Karl Pemberton, director of business development at Active Financial Services said: “The two apprentices we have retained have both enthusiasm and a willingness to learn and improve, something that is not always easily found with young junior staff. Most just take things for granted, however, I’m sure both Andrew and Laura will go on to bigger and better things within Active.”
Karl was also keen to promote the benefits that apprentices can bring to other companies and added: “I would, without question, recommend an apprentice to any business.
“It is easy to look for college and university graduates, thinking they will be fully qualified for the job. From experience this is not always the case. Both of our successful apprentices have chosen to learn on the job, rather than straightforward studies, which shows their motives clearly.
“The NECC training advisors help to keep the apprentices focused and having those external eyes and ears ensures all parties are working effectively towards their goal.”
