Businesses urged to pave way for electric cars in North East

The manufacturer has already delayed an announcement on whether thousands of car-production jobs are coming to Wearside.
Last night the North East Chamber of Commerce urged companies from Teesside to Berwick to back the efforts.
Mark Stephenson, policy adviser at the North East Chamber of Commerce, said it was important the region did not miss out on a "valuable opportunity to lead the way on electric vehicle implementation".
He added: "Improving our regional infrastructure will send a clear sign that our status as the UK’s first Low Carbon Industrial Area is not merely honorary.
"There are clear incentives for businesses to invest in this infrastructure – this funding underlines that fact. It is now up to businesses to take advantage of the opportunities that are out there."
Chris Pywell, head of strategic economic change at One North East, said: "This is an excellent financial opportunity for regional businesses and organisations who want to help lead the switch towards green transport and we want as many people as possible to be involved.
"If our bid is successful, the funding would strengthen our region’s position as a leading location in the UK both for electric car technology and for the development of a national charging infrastructure."
Those who have so far confirmed their support include supermarket firm Tesco, Land Securities (owners of the Bridges Shopping Centre), and support services provider eaga. Local authorities signed up include Sunderland City Council, Durham County Council, South Tyneside Council, Stockton Borough Council and Newcastle City Council, joining the likes of Northumbria University, the University of Sunderland and the North East Business and Innovation Centre in Sunderland in the regional bid.
