AMEC's key role in huge gas project

James Wharton, Conservative candidate for Stockton South, led calls for a geographic survey of old salt mines and cavities beneath the Tees estuary, amid estimates the Tees Valley could have the potential to accommodate as much as 5% of the UK’s storage needs.

Andrew Stacey, director of Gateway Storage, said the latest facility was much needed.

"The detailed engineering design work, and the tender process for the main construction contracts that will follow later this year will support a commitment to construction at the end of this year," he said. "We are delighted to have the depth of experience that AMEC, Parsons Brinckerhoff and Senergy offer us and look forward to working with them to deliver the much needed Gateway facility."

Neil Bruce, executive director of AMEC, said the contract win demonstrated the company’s all-round energy capabilities.

"This challenging and ground-breaking project couples our considerable front-end engineering design expertise on traditional offshore projects with our leading process capability."

The project’s first gas storage services will be made available by 2014.
