'Priority' pledge from Teesside dealership in Toyota recall

THE boss of a Teesside Toyota dealership said he was taking on extra staff and extending opening hours to deal with the worst recall in the Japanese car giants history.

Toyota recalled more than 180,000 models in the UK this week after reported problems with the accelerator pedal.

And yesterday it emerged that 270,000 of Toyotas flagship gas-electric Prius hybrid model were also being recalled in Japan and the US, due to concern over the brakes. None of the UKs Prius cars has been recalled, and there have no accidents linked to the accelerator problem.

Richard McVay, operations manager at Toyota dealers RMB Automotive, Stockton, said dealing with affected customers was a priority.

Customers are understandably concerned, he said, but the ones we have spoken to - and Ive spoken to them personally - have been understanding and remain loyal to Toyota. They appreciate Toyota has been honest with them and taken action.

We have had a lot of enquiries and we are extending our opening hours to accommodate customers affected as a priority. Toyota is training technicians and we are also advertising for between five and ten more across Teesside. Replacement parts will be fitted as a priority.

The Stockton forecourt has also taken on four more reception staff to cope with an influx customer enquiries.

Repair parts are due to arrive in the UK next week, with the first repairs taking place on February 10.

Mr McVay said Toyota had been working with the DVLA to contact motorists affected by the recall as quickly as possible.

Cars affected by the recall include certain batches of AYGO (MMT version), iQ, Yaris, Auris, Corolla, Verso and Avensis. Customers are being encouraged to call a Toyota help hotline on 0800 1388744.
