Buoyant Opus aims to recruit 80 more staff

A MECHANICAL and electrical contracting firm plans to create 80 jobs over the next two years after almost doubling its turnover to £4m and moving into new offices.

Opus Building Services has attracted a raft of new orders since moving from its previous site at the Business Innovation Centre (BIC) in Sunderland to new offices at the Quadrus Centre on Boldon Business Park, South Tyneside.

The firm, which was founded in 2006, has received a large number of contracts in the education and health sector, which it said had left it largely unaffected by the economic downturn.

The company, which specialises in mechanical and electrical services to commercial, industrial, public sector and domestic clients, has seen its annual sales grow from £2.5m to over £4m since the move in 2008, and now expects this to reach £6m by next year.

Managing director Gavin Richardson said that the firm was about to start on a number of projects, including a £300,000 contract from Gateshead- based construction firm Tolent to fit out the BIC’s Jupiter Centre in Sunderland.

The firm is also due to start work with national builder Rok to install electrical circuits at the newly refurbished midwifery department at the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle.
