Langley in move to city law firm rival

THE senior partner of Newcastle law firm Watson Burton is quitting to join city rival Muckle.

Rob Langley, who has been at Watson Burton since 1977, became senior partner in 2006 shortly after the firm’s move to new offices in St James’ Gate.

Mr Langley will leave once Watson Burton has appointed his successor and he has helped the new appointment settle into their new role.

During his tenure he has consolidated and built upon the growth of the firm which now also has offices in London and Leeds.

He said last night: “I am very sad to be going after many happy years at Watson Burton, but following three years in the top role, it is time for someone else to take over and move the firm forward with a new vision for the next phase in our long history.

“I have had a fantastic time and it has been a real privilege to be senior partner.”

As well as the senior partner, Mr Langley was head of the firm’s engineering unit in the construction and engineering department.

Established in 1811, Watson Burton is now one of the region’s top four law firms employing 230 people. But like many law firms, it encountered difficulties during the recession, making more than 60 redundancies.

In November, the seven senior partners, including Mr Langley, revealed they had put a further £1m in to the firm to prepare for increased competition in the legal sector.

The move will be regarded as a coup for commercial law experts Muckle.
