Helius Energy powers on

HELIUS Energy, the power firm that launched in Middlesbrough in 2004 with ambitious plans for development on Teesside, has been given the green light to build a 100MW e biomass-fuelled electricity generating station near Bristol.

The AIM listed firm consolidated the business last summer by registering its head office in London to help attract investment and closed its local office.

Located at Avonmouth Dock on the Bristol Channel, its new station will produce enough renewable energy to power around 200,000 homes. The electricity will be fed into the local grid, for which Helius has already secured grid access rights.

Chief executive of Helius, Dr Adrian Bowles, said: “This consent builds on the success of our projects at Stallingborough and Rothes and will enable Helius Energy to play a crucial part in delivering a future energy supply which is reliable, renewable and sustainable.”

Last month Helius Energy said it is still looking to build at least one power plant on Teesside over the next five years, despite moving out of the region.

The company has a £500m turnover and is looking for sites across the UK after selling its first plant in Grimsby to German utility group RWE Innogy for almost £30m in 2008.

The firm said it still hoped to build “at least one plant” in Teesside, which would create up to 50 permanent jobs and around 500 during its two-year construction.
