Plenty of support for Postura Healthcare in Whitley Bay
A HEALTHCARE entrepreneur who created a range of sports mattresses has signed an agreement with the British Athletes' Commission (BAC), and expects sales to rocket in the run-up to the London 2012 Olympics.
John Tuton, who runs Postura Healthcare in Whitley Bay, North Tyneside, has seen sales of his mattresses grow each month since setting up in 2007, and now expects to see his turnover increase from £250,000 to £1m by 2014 – and he hopes to move manufacturing to the North East.
The Mammoth Elite Sport mattress, which is made in Manchester, recently received funding from a private investor to help with marketing costs, and has now been endorsed by the BAC.
Mr Tuton says the product provides support beyond that of more widely-available memory foam mattresses and is from breathable and stretchy fabric.
The mattress has been accredited by healthcare bodies, including the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) and the Medical and Healthcare Regulatory Authority (MHRA), and has also received the backing of some of the region’s top athletes, such as long-distance runner Vaughan Hemy.
Although the recession has slowed the rate at which Mr Tuton had hoped to grow the business, he expects to hit his sales targets after securing the endorsements from, and selling the product to, some of the country’s top sportsmen and women, including kayaker and Olympic gold medalist Tim Brabants and Sunderland footballer Kieran Richardson.
Mr Tuton said he would be looking at the possibility of shifting production to the North East as part of his expansion plans, which would create jobs in the region.
He said: “We have sales grow significantly since securing our new wave of endorsements, and expect this to continue as we near the 2012 Olympics.
“I believe we will be selling around 200 mattresses each month by that point, which will help us to expand the businesses internationally.”
The entrepreneur says he benefited from the mattresses himself after he broke his ribs playing rugby in 2004.
“The new mattress has attracted a lot of support, so much so that I am confident that Mammoth will be a household name in two years’ time,” he said.
“The beds are not just for athletes but also for those that have experienced back pain as a result of traditional products on the market.
“The new investment, as well as the attention we have received from some of the country’s top sportsmen, should help us to increase our sales significantly, despite the effects of the ongoing downturn.”
