Biotech plant is magnet for others - NEPIC

A LOCAL process industry chief today said the Ensus plant is a valuable magnet for spin-off projects and had made the world "sit up" and look at Teesside as an investment possibility.

Dr Stan Higgins, chief executive of North East Industry Cluster (NEPIC), represents more than 500 chemical, pharmaceutical biotechnology and support companies across the region.

He said: "It represents a world-scale investment, and we’ve got it on Teesside. We are attracting other industry biotechnology projects to the region partly because we are demonstrating we can do the large projects.

"This is a world-scale project," he said, "but sometimes when new plants are built, despite all the approvals from the relevant bodies, adjustments have to be made. The current odour problem is unfortunate, but I’m confident they will soon be able to put it right. Ultimately, the plant is employing some great young people and is going to provide jobs and supply chain work for the long term. It helps the UK with its carbon reduction commitments and has a huge impact on its Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation."
