Twenty new recruits take to the streets in Newcastle
BUSINESS Improvement District (BID) Company NE1 has created 20 jobs in Newcastle City Centre after hiring new recruits to its team of Street Rangers.
The rangers, who can be seen around the city centre sporting blue uniforms, are operated on behalf of NE1 by outsourcing firm Mitie and provide a number of services designed to make the area safer and more welcoming.
The new rangers will be employed on a six-month contract as part of the Government’s Future Jobs Fund scheme, which provides paid work experience for youngsters struggling to find employment.
The new recruits will join NE1’s 12 full-time Street Rangers.
The Street Rangers work closely with businesses to address any concerns, while also providing a “meet and great” service for tourists and shoppers and working with the police to ensure to help reduce anti-social behaviour.
NE1 also said that it was looking to add to its nine-strong rapid response cleaning team, after adding three members since March.
Newcastle city centre became the UK’s 90th BID in November 2008 after firms elected to pay an extra tax to fund improvements to their trading environment.
Adrian Waddell, operations manager at NE1 and manager the Street Rangers team, said: “The Street Ranger jobs will give these recruits really valuable work experience and provide them with a recognised qualification that may help open the door for future employment opportunities.
“Over the next six months we will be working closely with the recruits to ensure they get maximum benefit from their time with NE1 and that the public gets maximum benefit.”
