Van Mildert has designs on becoming a national player

DESIGNER fashion retailer Van Mildert has outlined ambitious growth plans as it continues to buck the trend on the high street.

The Middlesbrough-based boutique chain says new outlets in out-of-town shopping centres and its online operation will drive growth over the coming years.

Buoyed by the success of its recent store opening in Hull and ahead-of-expected sales at its new store in Gateshead’s Metrocentre, the group says it believes it can become a truly national retailer.

Van Mildert, which was bought by Delima Retail owned by brothers Eric and Cyril Williams in 2007, now boasts six outlets – including its original Durham stores - and was recently named by Drapers as one of the most inspiring independent retailers in the country.

It focuses on the premium young male fashion market, stocking exclusive brands such as Stone Island, Armani, Hugo Boss, Burberry, Barbour and Vivienne Westwood. Many of these have not previously been widely stocked by stores in out-of-town shopping centres.

“We are trying to create a truly national chain,” said Eric Williams. “We can see opportunity on fresh ground in out-of-town shopping centres.”

Williams said the next Van Mildert store is planned to open in Sheffield’s Meadowhall shopping centre later this year with a further location, as yet unconfirmed, to also follow in 2011.
