Wilton Group chief wins top business award

Bill Scott

THE head of Teesside’s Wilton Group has been named North East Business Executive of the Year 2011.

Bill Scott, who co-founded the Wilton Group in 1994 and turned it into an £84m turnover business with 560 staff, was presented with the region’s most prestigious business accolade in Newcastle last night.

The 28th North East Business Executive of the Year Awards, run by The Journal and the Evening Gazette, took place at the Newcastle Marriott Hotel, Gosforth Park.

The award caps yet another extraordinary period of growth for the Teesside firm which has bought four companies in the last three years and aims to see its revenues top £100m next year.

The business, which provides fabrication and site services for the offshore and petrochemical industries, this year opened a factory in Dundee and two new offices in Brasil.

Wilton Group, which is based in Port Clarence near Middlesbrough, has nearly tripled its revenues in the last three years, seen its exports quadruple and its profits are among the fastest- growing of any company in the UK. It has further ambitious plans for a number of additional acquisitions while moving further into the renewable and nuclear sectors.

Mr Scott paid tribute to his team at last night’s awards, adding: “Our vision was always to create a business that would grow and we’ve pushed and pushed to get that vision.”

With hopes of creating more jobs and securing further contract wins, Mr Scott said 2012 was set to be a “fantastic” year for the company.

Scott, who also won the award as the Teesside Business Executive of the Year, beat Tyneside & Northumberland winner Michael Sandford-Couch of Potts Print and Durham & Wearside winner Phil Cronin of Tombola.
