THE design firm behind pubs and shops such as Lady Grey's and the Boiler House has been included in a review of the world's top interior designers.
Collective Design launched in 2009, and its range of work includes pubs in Newcastle, nightclubs in Leeds, and jobs further afield in London and even Switzerland and Asia.
The company work for Jesmond clothing store Jules B was included in the Andrew Martin Review, which features interior design talent worldwide. The project for Jules B owner Julian Blade involved a complete makeover at the end of last year.
Collective Design’s designer Simon Mcilwraith said the company has ambitions to be “the number one international design practice in Newcastle and to give some of the bigger ones in London a run for their money too”.
He said: “The way I do it is that I don’t leave anything to chance. There’s a system I use that takes the project from concept to completion and I design everything from the carpets to the wallpaper and the light fittings.
“You’ve got to understand what the public wants. At the end of the day if you design something nobody wants, it’s just not going to work. If I do a bad venue, word will get around.
“You’re constantly trying to follow where fashions are going or trying to create the fashions myself. I want to put people on the map for something I’ve designed. It’s very much trying to tap into what’s happening at the moment.
“Before the recession you used to recommend a re-design every three years. Now you try to design something for clients that will become a classical design. It’s part of a designer’s job now to create something that will last five or 10 years.”
