Nissan boss backs new apprenticeships drive

JAPANESE car giant Nissan has put its weight behind a campaign aimed at ensuring the North East does not miss out on lucrative opportunities in advanced engineering and manufacturing because of a lack of skills.

Semta, the sector skills council for science, engineering and manufacturing technologies in the UK, is spearheading a drive to encourage employers in the region to do their bit, through apprenticeships, graduate programmes and staff training courses, to plug the North East’s growing skills gap.

Next week the organisation will host two events in the region which will focus on creating new opportunities for emerging talent in engineering, science and manufacturing, as well as upskilling the existing workforce in those key sectors.

The events, which take place on January 17 at the Skills Academy for Manufacturing Innovation in Sunderland and January 19 at the Xcel Centre in Newton Aycliffe, have been backed by a number of leading North East industrialists and employers.

Among them are senior members of Nissan, who will provide delegates with inspiration stories of what can be achieved through apprenticeships for both individuals and businesses.
