SABIC boss goes back to the floor

ONE OF the most powerful men in Teesside’s chemical industry went back to the floor this week as part of a Learning and Skills Council (LSC) North East campaign to promote the business benefits of apprenticeships.

Paul Booth, UK President of SABIC, one of the world’s industrial giants, began his climb to the top as an apprentice on Teesside.

He joined today’s trainees to see how life had changed and to tell employers what can be achieved through the apprenticeship programme.

Paul and Diane Hunt, partnership director for LSC North East spent time with apprentices, including SABIC sponsored trainees, at the TTE Technical Training Group.

Paul, who is originally from North Ormesby in Middlesbrough, served his apprenticeship with ICI.

He said: “Apprenticeships offered the foundations to a successful and long career when I started out and that is still true today.

“Whatever position you hold in this industry, there is no substitute for having a strong understanding of the practical issues a business has to deal with.”
