ONLINE search specialist, Infoserve, is to almost double its 120-strong Darlington team.

Seventy new jobs will be created in addition to 21 recruits taken on at the beginning of November.

The firm said its expansion reflected the popularity of the internet as a replacement for more traditional business, retail and services listings, such as Yellow Pages.

The recruitment drive follows a record month for the company, which has seen a 14% increase in registered customers since April.

More than 35,000 now pay to use the service, which has exclusive contracts with Google and Yahoo! Infoserve is Yahoo! Local’s official UK online advertising partner and only one of three companies in Europe to become an authorised Google AdWords reseller

The two contracts have been key in pulling around the company’s fortunes.

In June this year, Leeds-based Infoserve said it had cut annual losses from £3.2m to £2.89m.

Chief executive Steve Barnes said the company was moving swiftly back into the black, and revealed it was in discussions with an unnamed potential buyer.
