GVA appointed at Asda project in Wynyard

A NORTH-EAST firm has been appointed consultant on a multi-million pound distribution warehouse project for supermarket giant Asda at Wynyard.

It was announced in December that up to 500 people would be employed at the garment processing facility - with more jobs during construction.

The 350,000 sq ft unit is to be run by Leeds-based Clipper Logistics.

The regional office of GVA has now been appointed as employer’s agent and cost consultant on the project.

GVA is project managing the new 343,000sq ft warehouse.

The development is a joint venture between British Airways Pension Trustees and Sladen Estate, both of whom GVA works with closely on a national basis.

Work started in November and will complete in September this year, when Clipper Logistics Group will take occupation on a new 16 year lease. Clipper will distribute clothing for George at Asda and are also providing significant investment to produce a state of the art garment processing hub. This will include an additional 450,000sq ft of mezzanine floor (on three storeys) within the main building footprint.

Gordon Hewling, director within the Newcastle office of GVA, said: “We are delighted to be involved in one of the largest industrial deals in recent years.

“Following our initial involvement with Phase 1, which was completed in 2006, it is excellent to see the remainder of the development being built-out.”

Commuters on the A19 can now see the building taking shape, with the steel frame complete and cladding about to commence.
