DR Simon Stobart has been promoted to become Teesside University’s new dean of the School of Computing.
He will be leading a school that has already built up a national reputation for its work in animation and computer games as well as traditional computer science.
The 43-year-old from Durham first joined the university two years ago as an assistant dean for recruitment and development for the School of Computing. Teesside’s expertise in technology and its work with business were cited when it was named University of the Year 2009 by the Times Higher Education Supplement.
Dr Stobart said: “To be appointed as dean when we’re University of the Year is absolutely fantastic. I’m aiming to make the School the number one place for anyone in the world who wants to study computing, animation and games design. The school is recognised as delivering world-leading education and research.“
At the age of 18 he enrolled on a BA (Hons) degree in Data Processing at the University of Sunderland. He remained at the university after graduation progressing to his final position as a Principal Lecturer.
Since joining Teesside University Dr Stobart has played a key role in the School of Computing’s international developments. He added: “We now have high-quality strategic franchise partnerships in Europe, Africa, Middle East and South East Asia. To see these grow is very pleasing.”
