More than million visitors are expected in Hartlepool, with 250,000 of these expected from outside the region. It is expected to bring £16m into the North East economy.

When the Tall Ships’ Race came to NewcastleGateshead in July 2005, 1.5m visitors came and over 40% were from outside Tyne & Wear.

The latest Tall Ships' Races will be the biggest free event in the country this year.

Hartlepool Quays beat off competition from Leith, Aberdeen and Newcastle to become the only UK host port for 2010.

Each year, between 70 and 100 ships arrive from 15 to 20 countries.

The first race in 2010 will sail from Antwerp, in Belgium, to Aalborg, in Denmark, then on to Kristiansand, in Norway, for the start of the second and final race to Hartlepool.

At least half of each ship’s crew must be aged between 15 and 25.

The main aim of the event is to provide an opportunity for young people to develop their personal skills in a challenging and memorable sail training environment.
