Liverpool FC in takeover talks

One of Liverpool FC's co-owners Tom Hicks is reported to be in takeover talks with Kuwaiti billionaire businessman Nasser Al-Kharafi.

Meetings are said to have have taken place in London between representatives of Mr Al-Kharafi and Mr Hicks.

Hicks and his co-owner George Gillet are believed to value the club at around £550m, despite having bought it for just £218m less than two years ago.

Reports suggest talks with Al-Kharafi, said to have a £9bn fortune, first took place with a view to financing Liverpool's proposed new stadium in Stanley Park, but then moved on to a possible buy-out.

The US pair's plans for a new stadium have stalled after rising costs meant it would cost around £450m rather than the £300m first budgeted.

The Al-Kharafi family has made its fortune from a variety of businesses, including construction, banking, engineering, telecommunications and fast food.
