Cussons getting in a profitable lather

Soap maker PZ Cussons has reported a 13.5% rise in half-year profits after UK brands including Imperial Leather continued to perform well.

The Stockport-based firm, which saw revenues rise 31.5% to £393.8m in the six months to November 30, also benefited from product launches as profits for the period jumped to £36.9m.

Profits were higher in both Europe and in Nigeria, where the firm has a strong presence, despite the impact of higher milk costs.

In the UK, the Imperial Leather brand was completely relaunched in the period with an updated look and new fragrances. The company’s Original Source brand was extended through new product launches, including a new men’s range, while Carex maintained its position as the UK’s leading anti-bacterial handwash following strong demand for its new waterless hand gels.

Cussons said: ``This ongoing programme of new product innovation focused on the UK market has ensured continued good performance and maintenance of the business’s number one position in the UK personal wash category."
