Highlighting work of young entrepreneurs

PROMINENT North East companies and organisations are throwing their weight behind an award event aimed at highlighting the work of the region’s young entrepreneurs.
The final of the Young Enterprise Awards takes place on June 17 and The Journal and our sister paper the Evening Gazette at Middlesbrough are supporting the annual event.
There are 13 award categories and the Most Creative Company is this year sponsored by the Arts Council North East.
Susan McKeon, head of communications, Arts Council England, North East, said: “Entrepreneurship and the creative industries play an ever-increasing role in our economy and are at the forefront of the UK’s modernisation.
“Through this award we are able to recognise the success of our region’s future entrepreneurs, who by demonstrating an innovative and enterprising approach to running a creative business, are realising their potential and achieving their goals.”
The Spirit of Enterprise Award is sponsored by One NorthEast. Tim Pain, its head of business enterprise and skills, said: “The future economic prospects of the region are dependent upon the ability of our young people to be enterprising and adapt to the dynamic needs of business.
“We continue to work with young people, teachers, entrepreneurs and communities to raise awareness of enterprise and provide young people with the necessary skills to help them start up and stay in business.”
Young Enterprise North East (YENE), which created the awards, was first established in the North East in 1975 and aims to offer a wide range of stimulating, curriculum-enhancing programmes that enable young people of all ages to gain personal experience of the world of business while still in education.
This includes the unique opportunity to establish and run a profit-making company.
Some 20,000 school and college students aged between four and 24 take part in YENE initiatives every school year.
The final takes place on Tuesday, June 17, at Newcastle Marriott Hotel, Gosforth Park.
