Focusing on rapid growth of technology
Nov 20 2008 by Andrew Mernin, The Journal
IN response to the rapid growth of the region’s science and technology industries, The Journal is launching a new weekly supplement focused on the burgeoning sectors.
The four-page supplement will incorporate nedigital business – which will now have its own section within the science and technology pull-out – and will widen our scope to cover all aspects of the North East’s developing knowledge-based economy.
From Berwick to the Tees Valley, the North East is home to hundreds of businesses which are embroiled in developing groundbreaking technologies and scientific research that could change the world.
Our infrastructure to support these companies continues to evolve at pace and innovations such as Sunderland Software City and the University of Teesside’s Institute of Digital Innovation Centre are beginning to turn heads across the globe.
The birth of Newcastle Science City, which has been championed as a shining example of Gordon Brown’s vision of creating a highly skilled knowledge economy, looks set to further strengthen our position as an area of scientific excellence.
The development, which could transform Newcastle into Europe’s premier science quarter, will be completed by 2011, but it has already attracted interest from corporate giants such as Microsoft and Google.
Meanwhile, E-Science Central recently became the first commercial entity to emerge on the back of the Newcastle Science City project and could play a major role in building a reputation for the region as an international hotbed for server-based computing. Then there is the pioneering work going on in our network of laboratories in the bioscience, pharmaceutical and chemical industries.
While pharmaceutical businesses like Onyx Scientific and Cambridge Laboratories expand their reach across the world, the region’s universities continue to churn out fledgling bioscience firms on a seemingly weekly basis.
Read news, analysis, features and comment on these companies and the issues affecting them, in our new supplement which is launched next Thursday.
The pull-out will be sponsored by NETParknet – the online extension of the North East Technology Park at Sedgefield, County Durham.
NETParknet enables from across the North East to be a part of the NETPark community, including online workshops and lectures, tailored business advice and even a virtual office.
We feel NETPark’s vision to become a world-class leader in new technologies goes hand-in-hand with our aim to become the leading resource for breaking news, features and analysis on the region’s science and technology sector.
