Project to create Sunderland IT hotspot

A PROJECT which aims to transform Sunderland into a global hotspot for technology companies, has won the backing of a major North East business development group.

Sunderland Software City has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Business & Enterprise North East, which is responsible for delivering Business Link services across the region.

The two groups will now work together to establish ways to strengthen Sunderland’s reputation as an IT-intelligent community.

Alastair MacColl, chief executive of Business & Enterprise North East, said: “This new partnership will help to reinforce Sunderland’s growing reputation as a real ‘hotspot’ for IT and a range of other adjacent sectors.”

Bernie Callaghan of Sunderland Software City said: “It is hugely significant for us to have received backing from Business Link. The Sunderland Software City initiative is already putting the city under the international spotlight as one of the world’s most IT intelligent places, and I am confident that with the support of Business Link, this reputation can only be further enhanced.”

Sunderland Software City, which was launched in 2007, aims to establish the technology sector as a major economic driver and employer on Wearside and will bring investment in schools and university courses to build the skills required for the industry.
