Digital thinkers urged to get involved

BUDDING entrepreneurs in the region have been urged to pitch to major industry body which aims to create 30 new digital firms in the North East in the next six months.

Under the watching eyes of influential technology leaders from around the world, the Institute of Digital Innovation in Middlesbrough used the Thinking Digital stage to show off some of the groundbreaking start-ups it has helped to create.

Since its inception, which is funded in part by Teesside University and regional development agency One North East, the body has helped launch 60 technology-based business.

And now, as it aims to bring a further 30 firms to market in the next six months, the IDI has called on tech-savvy Northeasterners with innovative ideas to take advantage of the organisation.

IDI director Dr James TerKeurst said: "We have got 30 companies that are looking to be formed in the next six months.

"I would like you to get involved. We are looking for new ideas and if you want to join us then that would be great."

During his Thinking Digital speech, Dr TerKeurst showcased some of the promising young businesses housed at the IDI, including filmmakers, animation firms and web designers.

Last year the IDI received a £1.9m injection of European funding to help launch the second phase of the IDI project which began in 2005.
