Collision of worlds can generate creative spark

ACADEMIC and commercial worlds are increasingly colliding in the hope of creating partnerships which benefit both.
As the recession rolls on, tighter bonds between North East universities and businesses are being formed.
For universities, commercial tie-ins give them financial clout as well as widening the job prospects of their students.
Meanwhile, science and technology businesses, which may be short of capital or expertise to power new research and development, can tap into a rich stream of resources on their doorstep.
The Journal has spoken to people on either side of the academic divide to find out more about the bridge-building process.
