New North East base to aid research

THE opening of the Astec centre will offer a number of opportunities for fledgling businesses, but will also benefit an institution that is over 100 years old.

The Dove Marine Laboratory in Cullercoats was opened by the Duke of Northumberland in 1908, and has since become a centre for research into fisheries science and ecology.

The laboratory is a key centre for Newcastle University’s School of Marine Science and Technology, which is leading research into areas such as algae biofuels. However, the prospect of state-of-the-art facilities nearby could help experts refine and expand discoveries further.

Dove Marine Laboratory director Professor Grant Burgess said: “We have several early-stage projects which we may be able to commercialise over the next 12 months. These involve growing and harvesting marine microalgae to make useful products such as omega 3 oils. Astec offers the expertise, historical track record and passion of the people involved to ensure this project is a success.”

Scientists at Dove are looking at the effectiveness of Prohibited Trawl Areas to manage fish stocks in the North Sea, and also investigating the effect of fishing on marine communities. Invertebrates such as sponges are being examined for use as medicines, while experts are also investigating whether marine bacteria can be an alternative source of nutritional oils such as cod liver oil. The university’s dental school is also collaborating in its research into the plaque-removal properties of seaweed extracts.

The international reputation of the university is already strong, but Professor Burgess believes the status of the sector as a whole in the North East can be strengthened by Astec’s emergence.

He said: “I warmly welcome the newly opened Astec facility where the focus is on application of marine science to building businesses and creating jobs. This complements and builds on current marine biotechnology programmes at the Dove and will considerably strengthen the region in this growth area.

“As the world’s first aquaculture incubator, Astec will draw aquaculture companies to the region to take advantage of the fantastic facilities, year-round warm seawater, nearby expertise and advice, and expertise, equipment and highly trained people from Newcastle University.”
