Web entrepreneur hits on a tweet idea

Kieron Donoghue

AT some point, sometimes more than once a day, a Twitter user’s cursor slinks guiltily to the right, and they sneakily bring up the option that lets them know if anyone’s sharing their words of wisdom.

Of course, the “your tweets, re-tweeted” function isn’t just for people who want to know whether people have passed on their jokes or insights. It may also be for people who want to see how many people have passed on their call for fundraising, or for businesses that want to know how many people are loud-hailing their brand.

As a man with more than 20,000 tweets under his belt on his personal account, ShareMyPlay- lists.com founder Kieron Donoghue is used to using Twitter for both business and pleasure. And he’s hoping a web domain he picked up as a reflex in an auction a little while back might make a nice little side project.

“I bought Retweet.co.uk just to have it really”, he said. “I didn’t really want to launch a fully fledged business on it because ShareMy Playlists.com is keeping me pretty busy, so I thought I’d do something that worked in the background and worked for people”.

Retweet.co.uk is yet to launch, but the idea is that users will be able to gauge which of their tweets were most popular with re-tweeters, and who they re-tweet most frequently. While Donoghue’s time is mostly dedicated to his SMP venture in Boldon, which enables people to create and share playlists of songs on streaming service Spotify, he believes Retweet.co.uk will be useful for both personal and business accounts.

Donoghue said: “It’s a service that works for brands who want to find out what tweets are most effective and what reach they get. You can find out what your most popular tweets were, how many people re-tweeted them and what their total reach is, and maybe through that you can reach out to them and see how you can work together.”
