Bespoke Radio launches football commentary iPhone app

IT'S time to re-write football history. Most of us have come to terms with the fact we’re never going to score the winner at an FA Cup Final, win the World Cup or drink champagne from a large, shiny trophy.

But it is possible to develop a commentary in which we’re the hero of the hour, even if this glorious triumph won’t appear in the history books or in tomorrow’s papers.

Gateshead’s Bespoke Radio has launched an iPhone app which allows you to build a commentary by adding your name, setting the scene and choosing how you apply the crucial touch.

For the Create a Commentary app, it snapped up recognised radio voices Mark Lawrenson and Mick Lowes to work up commentary with over 800 first names, 800 surnames, 103 teams and grounds and a variety of situations.

It will be launched at an event at Shearer’s Bar on Tuesday featuring Match of the Day’s Lawrenson and North East BBC commentator Mick Lowes.

Former North East radio producer and Bespoke Radio founder Jamie Wilkinson said: “We’ve recorded thousands of lines of commentary with Mick and Mark, and the app has 10 personalisable options ranging from first name to how old they are, the ground, competition and even a personal attribute.

“It then builds a commentary to your specifications.”

Bespoke Radio launched to produce personalised radio shows, but started offering personalised football commentaries for those who wanted something a bit cheaper.

Wilkinson said: “The radio shows were bespoke, so they take a long time to make, and people can’t always spare the cash to buy something like that for a birthday. We started doing football commentaries for around £25 as we wanted to tap into that same emotional reaction at a lower price point, and now that’s about 65% of our business.

“In the North East, the vast majority of the requests are for matches between Newcastle and Sunderland. Since it spread around the country, we’ve had a lot of FA Cup finals, and we’ve had World Cup requests from older customers, asking for a person to be put into the famous commentary in 1966.”

“The app isn’t quite as personalisable, although we can add names in updates if there’s a request. We can’t think of any other apps that are doing something like this.”

The app will be available from the app store at £1.59 from Tuesday. Visit the website www.createacommentary.com  for further details.
