No point in waiting – get networking

IN recent years, networking has become a real buzzword in the business world. In the North East we are lucky to have many organisations that host successful networking events across the region, but how well prepared are you to attend?

There are countless stories of successful networking experiences, but equally there are many businesses who fail to see the importance. This is understandable as there is no formal training in the subject and many people find the idea intimidating.

It is clear that effective networking, following some basic principles, can have a positive impact on business.

Connect don’t collect – Networking is about connecting people with similar interests for the purpose of uncovering opportunities, increasing knowledge and sharing information. It is not about attending as many events as possible and collecting business cards.

Build Relationships – Networking is more than just generating sales and revenue for your business. It allows you to:

Promote and market your business.

Identify new business opportunities by attending seminars and workshops.

Develop your presentation, people and negotiation skills.

Experience and share best practice.

Build long-term relationships.

Preparation before an event – Only attend events that you will gain benefit from. Your time is important so be selective as to which events you want to invest your time and money in. Think about what you want to get out of the event and the type of people you want to meet. Scanning through the attendee list to identify people you would like to network with is a good idea.

Communicate – Networking requires good listening skills so keep your introduction brief and always invite people to talk about themselves. Ice breakers and opening questions are excellent ways to make people around you feel relaxed. Good networking can really boost your confidence and don’t be afraid to take a guest if you are nervous.

Create a database – Your networking skills are only as effective as your follow-ups. Being proactive ensures that you can build on the relationships that you make at events. An effective database or client relationship management system is often a good way to keep records of contacts that you make while networking.

What are you waiting for? There are opportunities waiting for you at your next local networking event!
