He says the lack of Portuguese wine being imported to the UK highlighted a gap in the market.
“For one reason or another, the Portuguese have been protective of their grape varieties, although there are more than 200 of them,” said Mr Holmes.
“However, they have relaxed a bit over recent years and are now keen to develop the country’s wine export trade.”
Mr Holmes, who has also set up a website at www.portovino.co.uk, is continuing his role as a business adviser and is working alongside Newcastle-based Entrust and Finance Tree, which is the training company set up by Jonathan Gold, ex-director of North East venture capital provider NStar.
However, he is very much concentrating on his wine business and believes there is still a healthy appetite for more expensive bottles.
“Although we are still in a recession, I believe there are people out there who want an alternative to the wine they see in the supermarkets,” Mr Holmes said.
“Hospitality budgets may be tight, but the right drop of wine can make all the difference when trying to create a good impression with clients.
“It means people being entertained corporately have loads to talk about. Suddenly, there’s a buzz in the room – it becomes a much more pleasant event. It’s a lovely way for people to get together.”
We see it as an opportunity because the wine Press are starting to talk Portuguese wine up
