Bishop Auckland baker brings a global taste to the region

A BAKER is bringing a global taste to the region by producing artisan breads from around the world using ingredients sourced in the North East.

Bishop Auckland-based Sue’s Bread was initially started from a market stall by Sue Jackson.

She now supplies a local shop and has been approached by a hotel and restaurant.

Ms Jackson said: “I have always loved baking bread, and really enjoy the whole process of researching different ones, adapting them and making them with local ingredients.

“I have always travelled a lot and I, my husband and children spent a lot time in Portugal, and I loved the bread there.

“The demand is really growing and I'd love to develop further. I am looking into building a wood oven, which is how Portuguese bread is made.”

In addition to Portuguese bread, she uses recipes from France, Italy Spain, Bulgaria, Germany, the US and Ireland, including special and seasonal breads, including olive oil focaccia, rich dough fruit loaf, sweet and savoury brioche, edible bread bowls for soups and salads and designer breads on request.

Ms Jackson, who is also a nanny and a support worker for young people with physical and mental health problems, sought the Love Food project’s advice on developing her business.

Love Food supports the production, promotion, use and appreciation of locally grown or reared food in Teesdale, Weardale, the Allen Valleys and Derwentside.
