We all know how annoying flies can be. You’re preparing food on a warm day, the windows open to let in a breeze, and you take your eyes off your food for one minute only to find a fly has decided to take a rest on your sandwich. It’s a pain, isn’t it?

Because flies can be so annoying, effective fly control is big business. Companies are constantly inventing new ways of dealing with them. But there are also several methods you can use yourself, without the need for products.

Firstly, remember that prevention is better than cure. Rather than discovering ways of getting rid of flies, first find ways to prevent them from coming in the first place.

Always keep food covered and stored properly. If you leave food uncovered in your kitchen then you are just asking for trouble. Cover with clingfilm or tinfoil, or keep in secure Tupperware boxes.

Similarly, do not leave unwashed dishes around in your kitchen, as these too can tempt flies. Flies are attracted to the smell of food, so will immediately notice the unwashed dishes.

You will have noticed that your bin is a big source of attraction for flies. Always use a bin with a lid, and make sure you empty and clean it on a regular basis.

Be sure to keep your kitchen floor clean, and wipe up any crumbs or spills. Mop the floor and use a good disinfectant to remove any food smells.

Always clean around the cooker, as there are bound to be remnants of food here, and this will draw flies to your kitchen.

If it is summer and you need to leave your door open to let some cool air in, then you should invest in colourful streamers to hang on it, as they will stop the flies coming into your house.

These methods can help prevent flies coming into your house, but if they are already there then you need to look for ways to get rid of them!

Fly sprays are commonly used to get rid of flies. There are several makes on the market but they all do pretty much the same job - poison the flies. They are inexpensive and effective, but because of the poison many people would prefer not to use them.

Glue papers can also be used. The glue traps and kills the flies and then you dispose of the paper. Or you could opt for an ultraviolet zapper trap. The fly is drawn to the ultraviolet light and then electrocuted by the trap. These traps are commonly used in restaurants and other food outlets, but can also be used in the home if needed.

They can certainly be a pest but, thankfully, it is becoming easier to get rid of flies thanks to the development of new products. The best method of effective fly control, though, is prevention, and following the simple rules outlined in this article can help you to avoid having flies in your house in the first place!
