Polly's sitting pretty

A designer has launched a distinctive furniture business just months after graduating from Northumbria University.

Polly Westergaard, 21, graduated in July this year and has set up Westergaard Designs with help from the university's Designers in Residence scheme.

"Thanks to the scheme I have been able to use the on-campus wood and metal workshops and have also benefited from the lectures based around setting up a small business," she said.

Polly is a 3D designer specialising in bespoke furniture and product design. After recently attending industry exhibitions New Designs 2006 and 100% Design East in London Polly was delighted to receive a number of interested enquiries. Roger Candy, business partnerships manager at Northumbria University, said: "The Hatchery at Northumbria University works closely with the design school so we can offer designers like Polly the opportunity to learn the ropes of business as well as develop their creative talents."
