The North is leading the way in embracing electronic communication.
A survey by ICM found that 30% of people in the region say the best way to get their attention is to send an e-newsletter to their inbox - the highest figure in the UK.
Also, contrary to expectations that electronic communication is the preserve of teenagers, those most likely to respond to an e-newsletter are aged 35 to 44.
The survey, commissioned by Fuseboxdesign, of Newcastle, revealed huge regional differences.
Scots are taking longest to embrace electronic communication, with only 13% happy to receive email. In the South-East only 22% opt for e-newsletters.
Fuseboxdesign managing director Sarah Linley said: "With 70% of the UK now having access to the internet, it is evident that the inbox is replacing the letterbox."
Women are most receptive - 77% read ad mail compared with 31% of men.
