Here’s to the lighter side of business life

AN AWARDS ceremony which takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the business world and its inhabitants is set to return.

The Alternative Business Awards, which raises money for North disabled charity the Percy Hedley Foundation, will be held on Friday, September 7, at The Journal Tyne Theatre, Newcastle.

Now organisers are looking for nominations – or should that be victims? – in 15 categories to celebrate the 10th anniversary of this popular event.

Accolades include the Nice Guy/Gal category, the Robin Hood award for services to the community and the New Kid on the Block, for an individual who is new to the region and has made a favourable impact.

Des Bustard, of the Percy Hedley Foundation, said: “While these categories look set to receive the most nominations, the evening’s other awards are more about the business community having fun.

“These include the Lunchtime Achiever, the Flash Harry award for the best-dressed executive and the Great Company Shame about the Name award.”

There will be an overall award for Alterative Business Person of the Year, won in the past by Mary Coyle, George Gill, George Hepburn and Andrew Dixon. It is for the man or woman who does not necessarily work within a commercial business, but runs their organisation in a professional and businesslike way.

Mr Bustard said: “While the awards form the main focus of the evening, the Infamy Academy will provide a musical entertainment showcase with a host of budding entertainers from the business community seeking their five minutes of fame.”

The evening will be rounded off with cabaret from Brendan Healy, joined by co-host Kathy Secker, and music from The Honest Johns.

The awards, backed by The Journal and sponsored by Northumbrian Water and 15 other North businesses, raise money for the Percy Hedley Foundation, which helps children and adults with cerebral palsy, speech, language and communication difficulties.

Nominations are still being sought for all the award categories. Names of businesspeople who deserve a mention should be sent to the Percy Hedley Foundation by Monday, August 20. Email: g.faulkner@percyhedley.org.uk.

Local companies are being invited to bring clients for a fun night out and tickets can be bought via the foundation or from The Journal Tyne Theatre Box office.

Businesses wishing to be considered for the Infamy Academy talent showpiece should contact Andrew Dixon at NewcastleGateshead Initiative, who is co-ordinating entertainment with fellow musician David Haley. Email: andrew.dixon@ngi.org.uk
