NEWCASTLE Business School at Northumbria University works in partnership with a wide range of regional, national and international organisations, helping them develop their strategies, systems and employees.

Academics put their research expertise into practice, and individuals studying with Newcastle Business School develop their knowledge, skills and business acumen.

Executive and Corporate Development

Two professional centres – the Executive Development Centre (EDC) and Corporate Management Development Centre (CMDC) – offer a full range of services to all sectors of the business community, from bespoke executive and management education through to executive coaching services and consultancy.

By working closely with organisations, the EDC and CMDC are able to make a difference to that organisation by opening minds, changing cultures and transforming performance.

“There are a lot of courses on the market where it’s a case of pay, turn up and listen to the latest guru’s views on leadership,” says Professor Paul Croney, Dean of Newcastle Business School. “But we take an individual, tailored approach – we try to understand the individual and what their needs are.

“We bring those development needs out in the context of the latest thinking on leadership. It’s a much more effective process than just sitting in a group and listening to someone talk about leadership, that’s why we are winning new contracts and renewing existing ones.”

Executive Development Centre

There is no disputing that the performance of senior leaders is crucial to bottom-line success. In today’s demanding global economy, organisations will require leaders with exceptional abilities in order to survive and compete. To achieve this and avoid a leadership vacuum, organisations need to make a deliberate decision to establish a strong leadership culture and start developing future leaders today.

Newcastle Business School is poised to face this challenge by daring to be different and launching its Executive Development Centre, with a focus on providing innovative, challenging and relevant development for senior leaders.

The thinking behind the Executive Development Centre is performance enhancement within a business context, enabling leaders to work ‘on’ themselves and ‘on’ their business. Research informed teaching and learning provides a robust basis to our programmes whilst facilitators ensure the learning is practical, grounded and relevant by drawing on their extensive, real world business experience.

The Executive Development Centre is based at our state-of-the-art Business School and has its sights set firmly on the future.

As Jane Turner, Associate Dean for the centre, points out: “Our philosophy energises, challenges and develops senior leaders. This is not traditional Executive Development.”

The EDC specialises in senior leader development and is working with organisations including Northumbrian Water and the NHS. The centre also offers short programmes in all aspects of leadership development, strategic planning and change management.
