Learn to navigate through turbulent times

NEWCASTLE University Business School continues its’ Leadership series of business workshops with visiting professor Peter Shaw, author and former Government regional director, on January 22, 2009.

Professor Shaw, a top-level business coach, will explore the themes from his latest book acknowledging that great leaders manage periods of change but posing the question what happens when the change is sustained and great?

Professor Shaw said: “Sudden changes in business fortunes combined with high levels of uncertainty and rumour are extremely difficult to manage, and have knock-on effects throughout the private and public sectors.

“The credit crunch fallout together with global commodity inflation has led to a downturn that is more rapid and deeper than many have experienced. Leaders today are faced with intense work and personal challenges that can cause them to question their normal leadership approach.”

Professor Shaw believes that in order to succeed in an adverse economic environment the business leaders of today need to:

Maintain their core attitudes and beliefs, no matter how much pressure they come under.

Tackle each new challenge clearly and calmly, leading from the front to inspire those around them.

Know to look after themselves to maintain stamina and well being for a lengthy and often exhausting period.

This event is the latest in a Business Leadership Series undertaken by numerous experts and business leaders held at Newcastle University Business School.

Other workshops have included business continuity planning – what happens in the event of a disaster – and analysis of what makes a truly great leader.

In both cases workshops took place involving panels of experts and leaders from industry and were designed in a more interactive and therefore more stimulating format than a question and answer lecture.

This event starts at 6.00pm and is open to anyone. The cost is £10. To find out more about this and other events at Newcastle University Business School and to register please contact Ruth Warwick atat bsevents@ncl.ac.uk or visit: www.ncl.ac.uk/nubs/about/events/
