Future leaders in the region could benefit from local MBA scholarships

DURHAM Business School has launched a competition to find three motivated high flyers working in either the business, public or voluntary sector to win one of three part-funded scholarships for its highly acclaimed Executive MBA programme.

Many ambitious people in the region have reaped the benefits the two-year, part-time Executive MBA at Durham Business School has to offer and they’ve come from a variety of personal and professional backgrounds.

One such graduate is County Durham-based Kathy Betteridge, a manager who has worked in the public sector providing support to teenage parents. Her Executive MBA gave her the tools to take her career to a whole new level.

Kathy was working as a Department for Education and Skills (DfES) advisor, working with the strategic management of local authorities and public bodies throughout England, when she decided to embark on the part-time programme.

She wanted to complement almost 21 years of voluntary and public sector experience with a broader understanding of business and management to help progress her career. Kathy explained: “The programme gave me a far wider understanding of management issues and principles together with a deeper knowledge of the world of business.

“Having since moved into the private sector I am fortunate that the company I now work for is very supportive of life-long learning and they appreciate the added value an MBA qualification can bring to the organisation and its employees.”

Now working as a Strategic Facilitator for Learner Support for Liberata, a company that provides outsourced services to public sector organisations, Kathy has been able to put what she has learned from her MBA into practice in the workplace. Director of Executive MBA programmes, Anne Woodhead, explained: “The Durham Executive MBA is designed to be relevant to business people across all sectors – public, private and voluntary – and we’re keen to make it as accessible as possible to people across the region, where we have so much talent and potential.”
