Absence from work is a huge issue for the majority of employers in the region.
Recent statistics from the Engineering Employers' Federation (EEF) Northern reveal that if an employee is off work for six months or more then there is only a 50% chance they will return to work. This research, taken from the paper entitled Wellbeing In The Workplace, highlights the seriousness of absenteeism.
Alan Hall, director of EEF Northern, said: "We remain committed to improving working environments in the North-East and are continuing to work with local businesses to establish ways of encouraging employees to return to work after sick leave."
Last year, in conjunction with the North- East Employer Coalition, EEF held a Fit for Life Conference which was led by Department for Work and Pensions minister Lord Hunt and provided a national perspective on sickness absence and the importance of health and safety in the workplace.
With more than 140 delegates, including employers, GPs and occupational health providers in attendance, there is a clear recognition and demand to create a healthy workforce in the North-East.
Alan Hall said: "With 168 million working days lost to sickness in 2004 at a cost of £12.2bn, absence continues to seriously affect the profitability of UK businesses.
"If the North-East workforce is to reach its full potential we need to work together with local employers to find realistic and achievable solutions to build a healthy and prosperous workforce."
