TURNING off the analogue system has been widely talked about in the press and the first area of the country, Whitehaven in Cumbria, has already been turned off.
So we need to be ready to receive television, radio and other media in a completely different way.
Stockton Riverside College is training individuals and companies to make sure that they are fully qualified to install digital equipment in preparation for the switch over. Sky, Freeview and cable are the most widely used methods of receiving digital media but with FreeSat soon to be launched customers will have much more choice.
Alan Berriman, owner of Dorlcote Aerials who has recently completed the course, said: “I thought that the technical content and health and safety practices on the course at Stockton Riverside College were excellent. The Tees Valley will be switched off in 2012 but I have already installed a number of new aerials mostly for households that have bought new televisions as well as those taking advantage of digital television through Freeview.”
Brian Ostle, head of quality and standards and course lecturer, said: “By doing this course our students become registered with the Digital Installer Licensing Body meaning that they are safe and competent at their jobs. Not many colleges currently offer this course so we have had students coming from across the Tees Valley and beyond.”
The NVQ Electrical/Electronics Servicing-Signal Reception course is a work based qualification to reflect the roles and responsibilities of personnel within a sector of employment. This NVQ is for aerial installers and is recognised by the RDI as the only route to registration. The course can take up to a year.
