Alan sets his eyes on caring transport

MIDDLESBROUGH man Alan Callaghan is targeting up the burgeoning North-east residential care sector as he builds business at his new taxi firm for disabled people.

Already working with the Deaf Society and local hospitals, Mr Callaghan plans to expand Al Cal Cars by buying a mini-bus and laying on day trips around the region for people in care homes.

He said: “There are about 30-40 care homes in and around Middlesbrough and I believe there is enough demand to make this into a sustainable venture.”

Formerly a production operator at Hartlepool-based Oxford Chemicals, Mr Callaghan spotted a gap in the market for tailor-made transport for the disabled, including wheelchair users, deaf people and those with learning difficulties. Able-bodied people can also use the service.

Sixteen-year-old Jack Smith has benefited from a regular service to and from hospital since he fractured his neck playing rugby in January.

Mr Callaghan said: “I cater for a range of disabilities and I’ve established a text option service for deaf people who cannot book a taxi in the usual way.”
