Lamb packs are well received

A NEW promotional pack to help farmers increase lamb sales has been well received by abattoirs and processors as well as farmers.

The Quality Standard ‘Fresh From The Farm’ pack, developed by the English Beef and Lamb Executive (Eblex), encourages farm assured farmers – including those that don’t have their own shop or retail outlet – to sell their own lamb directly to consumers.

The promotional pack is currently being run by a number of abattoirs signed up to the Eblex Quality Standard Scheme.

Dick van Leeuwen, Eblex project manager, said: “We developed the ‘Fresh from the Farm kit’ in response to increasing calls from farmers wanting to set up their own box schemes. We now have a number of abattoirs taking part and the feedback from farmers involved in the project has been encouraging.”

The lamb packs are available in three sizes – mini (quarter lamb), medium (half lamb) or large (whole lamb). Free Promotional material is also provided in the kits for farmers and includes product leaflets with cooking guidelines, as well as posters to help raise awareness of the packs. A price list template is included which farmers can tailor to their own business, as well as a yield and cost planner, plus specifications for each cut on a CD-ROM. Large farm banners are also available on request.

Abattoirs, processors and farm shops must be assured and registered with the Eblex Quality Standard scheme to take part, and farmers must be a member of a recognised farm assurance scheme. For more details on the scheme and participating abattoirs, call 0800 781 4221
