FARMERS will be at Tesco in Consett today to talk to shoppers about local milk and its benefits in sustaining small dairy farms in the region.
People of all ages who want to learn about milk can try their hand at milking a “fake udder” and ask farmers about how milk is processed.
A class from local Delves Lane Junior School will be there and trying out milking for themselves.
Harold Forster, of East Wharmley Farm at Hexham, said: “The local choice products have proved a great success. Customers love it because it gives them the opportunity to buy locally sourced produce while helping to support us local farmers.”
Local choice was launched in Tesco stores in May last year, in 14 regions in England and Wales.
This has now grown to 17 regions, with more than 150 farmers signed up and receiving enhanced payments for their products.
Major investment by Dairy Farmers of Britain, into dairies, and a new direct-to-store delivery system, has meant local choice now has a better shelf life and quality.
