WHILE its football team may be languishing near the bottom of the Premier League, Sunderland has proved it is top dog when it comes to greyhound racing.
For the second time in four years, The Tetley Sunderland Greyhound Stadium won the Greyhound Track of the Year at the sport's Annual Northern Greyhound Awards.
The track faced stiff competition from fellow Northern tracks Doncaster, Sheffield, and Pelaw Grange but the judges decision was unanimous and Sunderland is the first stadium to take the title twice in the ceremony's history.
Sunderland stadium manager Joe O'Donnell, said: ''All of us at Sunderland are extremely proud to be honoured with this award again.
“To be named Greyhound Track of the Year is a huge credit to our staff. Everyone here works extremely hard in running the stadium and it is fantastic that the judges have again recognised us as a track committed to providing a night out for the public that's is not only great fun but also great value for money.
Sunderland's £500,000 upgrade where the popular 600 capacity 'Bunnies Bar' received a brand-new makeover in addition to refurbishments to the panoramic trackside restaurant, was noted by the judges to have 'significantly improved' the track's facilities for racegoers.
