Cleaning perfectionists keep firm in the family

The Scrubbas team

A CLEANING business is keeping its expansion in the family by recruiting a third member of staff.

Adele Whitfield, 30, and her mother Brenda Whitfield, 49, set up Scrubbas in January last year to offer a full range of cleaning services to commercial and domestic clients in County Durham.

Now the Consett-based firm has taken on a third member of staff – Brenda’s sister Sandra Bell – to cope with the extra workload.

Adele said: “We have been trading for just over a year now and due to more work coming in, we have just taken on our first member of staff.

“We offer both commercial and domestic cleaning, but at the minute we mostly do domestic cleaning for private residents.

“We do general house work, ironing and when we’re done everything is always spotless – including the lampshades.”

Adele had previously worked as a cleaner and her mum was unemployed when they decided to team up to launch the business.

Brenda said: “It was Adele’s business idea and she came up with the name Scrubbas, she said ‘come on lets do it’ – so we did, and have never looked back.”

The business received support from the Local Enterprise Growth Initiative (LEGI), Be Enterprising, which was set up to help entrepreneurs in the more deprived areas of the county.

Be Enterprising helped put together Scrubbas’ business plan and provided funds to cover a number of essential costs.

They included £350 towards helping Adele learn to drive, so the business could cover a wider geographical area.

The organisation also put up funds so Adele and Brenda could buy the initial cleaning equipment and products they needed and provided money so they could produce and circulate leaflets locally.

Michelle Rose, Brenda’s Be Enterprising coach, said: “Be Enterprising is committed to helping people in the most deprived communities of County Durham.

“Brenda and Adele both have a great work ethic and their enthusiasm and drive is an inspiration to anyone looking to change their life.

“They came to us with a business idea and we were happy to help put them on track.”

They both have a great work ethic and their enthusiasm is an inspiration to everyone.
