You're hired - to advise firms on apprentices

Apprenticeships have undergone a renaissance in recent years and are now available to people aged from 16 to 60. Around 80 different sectors now offer 180 different career choices under the scheme.

The construction and engineering industries have traditionally been in demand for apprenticeships but both sectors have been badly affected by the economic slowdown.

EDBS said it was now particularly keen to hear from firms in these sectors which are still looking to recruit young people. Funding help is available to cover the training costs for apprentices aged from 16 to 19.

All businesses based within East Durham - those within the former Easington District Council boundaries - are eligible to apply for support towards the cost of taking on an apprentice.
