Butler & Gee Accountants secure funding for staff training

AN accountancy firm which was set up by two friends who originally met as 11-year-olds at school has won funding to help staff improve their qualifications.

Chris Butler and Darren Gee, from Barnard Castle, originally set up Butler & Gee Accountants in 1996, after they both returned to the area and found themselves working for the same employer.

The pair saw a gap in the market to work with clients who needed advice on what was then the newly introduced HMRC self-assessment tax rules.

The business now has 12 staff, a second branch in Shotley Bridge in Derwentside and deals with clients all over the UK and in Europe and the US.

Mr Butler, who is a fellow member of the Association of Accounting Technicians (FMAAT), decided following this qualification route would benefit his staff. The firm was able to secure 40% funding for the training from the Rural Development Programme, via Business Link.

All staff are now receiving AAT training and attending courses covering the latest legislation and industry news. The funding has also allowed the firm to update its software and networking, improving efficiencies in working practices and streamlining back office functions.

Mr Butler said: “We’ve been involved with Business Link right from the beginning, getting advice and support as well as working alongside them on a number of business start ups. We’ve benefited in many ways from Business Link’s advice and this is why we’ve recommended it to a number of our clients too.

“Business Link has had a massive impact on our firm. It has meant that we have been able to maintain our training levels and standards. All our staff are up to date with the latest accountancy legislation and industry requirements.”

Mr Gee said: “The current economic climate means that as people are made redundant, for many the only option is to start their own business or go it alone. Business Link and other similar organisations are ideal to bounce ideas off, as well as get advice on everything you need to get yourself up and running.”

Lynne Groves, Business Link advisor, said: “We’ve worked with Chris and Darren for a number of years.

“Butler & Gee have always offered their staff the latest training to ensure that they stay at the forefront of their field, enabling them to gain additional qualifications. This has ensured that the firm can work with a wider range of customers and provide an accurate and extremely high level of service.”
