South Shields man launches Subtle Clothing brand

Gradley Thirkle of Subtle Designs

AN ETHICALLY aware entrepreneur has launched his own range of clothing after being inspired by a TV documentary.

Gradley Thirkle designs limited edition T-shirts made from organic cotton, which are manufactured responsibly under the Subtle Clothing brand.

South Shields-based Gradley had the idea after watching a TV show highlighting the attitudes and icons that have influenced British fashion.

He said: “After watching the British Style Genius, I remember thinking some people would wear anything if it would get them enough attention.

“It was something that really stuck with me so I decided to explore the idea of starting up a fashion label that would offer people a choice of clothing that would get them noticed for all the right reasons.

“The Subtle brand represents an understated quality throughout. Each design is created, without being flashy or relying on shocking designs.

“Instead, I believe that good quality materials and a strong design concept is enough to make anyone stand out in a crowd. Subtle’s logo is a peacock, it’s a nod to the initial thought that inspired the business and represents the concept behind the whole brand in a subtle way.”

He worked with South Tyneside enterprise agency Tedco and advisors from Business Link to put together the nuts and bolts of the business.
