Going the extra mile to support investors

TYNE and Wear Development Company is working hard to help businesses in Tyne and Wear access the support they need to make the most of their growth and investment plans.

In a challenging market, it remains a key driver of investment activity within the area as it continues to support local businesses and inward investors with their plans as they create jobs and invest in new technology.

The company provides a free and confidential service and is the first point of contact for growing businesses delivering support on everything related to investment including commercial property, finance, training, recruitment, labour availability and strategic advice.

Now in its 26th year Tyne and Wear Development Company, which was formed in 1986 and is funded by its own portfolio of commercial property, is providing a broader range of support than ever before for investors.

Paul Buie, manager of Tyne and Wear Development Company, said: “The support we offer is really tailored to the individual company. Some want us to help them pinpoint the right property, whereas others might be looking to improve the skills of the workforce, need help with accessing finance or even assistance with planning regulations.

“The enquiries we receive are extremely varied and that’s really a reflection of the market and the greater diversity of businesses in today’s economy. Companies are under pressure and they need us to go the extra mile to help them achieve their plans.”

Tyne and Wear Development Company works alongside major inward investors as well as young local SMEs and established businesses strategically important to the region’s economic growth.

Over the last couple of years this has proved highly successful with major investment projects – including Tesco Bank and Balfour Beatty – being attracted to the area. This has been complemented by the success of hundreds of local companies Tyne and Wear Development Company has worked alongside at the same time.

Recent companies to have benefited include automotive repair business A+M Wyness; disability service provider Neuro-Partners as well as air filtration specialist Independent Air Treatment Technology. In each case, the companies involved were able to receive support in identifying and moving into new properties to support the next stage of their development.

A+M Wyness, which specialises in the repair and installation of transport lifting equipment, has opened a new workshop on Team Valley, Gateshead. Set up in 2007, the new site close to the A1 provides the space and facilities the company needs to carry out major repairs and store its vehicles.

Michelle Wyness, finance director at the company, said: “Tyne and Wear Development Company and Gateshead Council have been superb. They went far and above the call of duty to help as we’d looked at several sites beforehand and couldn’t find anywhere that matched our needs.”

Tyne and Wear Development Company is an important supporter of the regional commercial property market. As well as holding one of the biggest property databases in the region, it also hosts the annual Tyne and Wear Commercial Property Show. The show is one of the biggest property showcases in the North and gives growing businesses an opportunity to receive advice from a range of agents, developers and support organisations in one place.

Paul adds: “We have some fantastic sites in Tyne and Wear and that’s a big selling point for the region. The property show is a nice way of showcasing that and bringing everybody together in one place to give extra impetus to the market.”

To highlight the services it offers Tyne and Wear Development Company has just launched a new website which helps investors access a wide range of information about the region at the click of a finger.
